We photographed an on-location newborn session in the Okushinano area of Nagano Prefecture. Using a soft light-purple beanbag as the backdrop, we coordinated a white gauze swaddle with a mohair “white bear” romper handmade by an overseas artisan. A clean white palette layered with a gentle lilac nuance, finished with lighting that flatters the baby’s skin to the fullest 📷
During this session we also captured a full, beaming newborn smile (reflex smile)—a moment that appears only briefly. With gentle backlight and careful exposure control, we rendered the softly opening mouth with tenderness 😊
In the latter half, we added cuts of the baby nestled in a hand-woven wooden basket to complete the story.
Concept | Balancing “comfort” and “delicacy”
Drawing on Okushinano’s quiet atmosphere and clear air, we kept contrast modest and preserved texture without blowing highlights. White wardrobe and props (gauze/mohair) were layered in-frame to show material differences, while the light-purple background brought everything together in a soft embrace. From sleeping expressions and tiny hands/feet to the newborn smile, we record the shapes and scale that exist only right now.

Low-saturation purple gently neutralizes skin redness and pairs beautifully with white props. We adjust fabric tension and release creases during the shoot so retouching stays minimal and the tone remains clean and soft.
Safety-first Workflow
We continually check breathing, body temperature, and limb color and use only non-forcing poses. Pose transitions move in small steps; supporting hands are removed in post if needed. Room temperature, humidity, and hygiene come first, and breaks/feeds follow the baby’s rhythm.

- Shooting — Proceeded safely with breaks as needed. We quietly watched for signs of a newborn smile and captured it at the best moment.
- Select & Retouch — We refined skin tones and the gradation of white linens and lilac background for a clean, gentle finish.
